The specialist

Who reads breast images at the centre, and when a specialist look is useful.

Where to start: screening, a symptom or a referral

Start with the reason you are coming, not with the name of a test. The reason decides which test makes sense, and the team can help if you are unsure.

  • No symptoms, and you want a check: this is screening. Read about breast cancer screening, then book the mammogram your doctor advises.
  • You have noticed a change: a lump, nipple discharge, pain in one spot, a skin or nipple change, or swelling under the arm. Open the matching symptom page above, or begin with breast lump evaluation. Tell the team it is a symptom when you book.
  • A doctor has referred you, or a scan elsewhere showed something: bring the referral, the reports and the images themselves. The radiologist compares them with any new pictures. The page on the breast radiologist explains when a specialist look helps.
  • Your report says "dense breasts": this is common and is not a diagnosis. Dense breast imaging explains the extra pictures that may be suggested.
  • You are not sure: message the team on WhatsApp or call, and describe what you have noticed and any earlier tests. The team cannot diagnose by message, but they can help you book the right appointment.

Most breast changes turn out not to be cancer. They still need to be looked at, because a lump cannot be judged by feel alone.

Mammogram, 3D mammogram or ultrasound?

Doctors often use more than one of these, because each sees something the others can miss.

  • Mammogram: the standard test for screening and for tiny changes that cannot be felt. It uses a low dose of radiation.
  • 3D mammogram: the same kind of test, with the breast pictured in thin layers. It helps when tissue overlaps, as it does in dense breasts.
  • Breast ultrasound: sound waves, with no radiation. It suits a lump, younger or dense breasts, and telling a cyst from a solid lump.

You do not have to choose alone. Your doctor will usually suggest the combination, and the team can help you match the booking to what has been advised.

How a breast visit works

Every breast visit follows the same pattern, although the tests differ. This is the usual order.

  • Booking. You message or call the centre, say what you need and what you have noticed, and the team confirms the test and how to prepare.
  • Arrival and questions. You are asked about symptoms, earlier breast tests, surgery or implants, pregnancy or breastfeeding, and family history. Bring earlier images and reports.
  • The imaging. This may be a mammogram, a breast ultrasound or both. For a mammogram you change into a gown. For an ultrasound the breast and underarm are uncovered.
  • A closer look, if needed. The radiologist may ask for extra pictures or a focused scan of one spot. This is common, and it does not mean a cancer has been found.
  • A needle test, only if advised. If imaging cannot settle what a finding is, the radiologist may advise a needle test. The team confirms when, where and by whom it is done, and it is explained before anything starts.
  • The report. The radiologist writes the report, and the team tells you when and how you will receive it. Take it to your own doctor.

What follows a result is planned by your own doctor or a breast surgeon. Our part is the images, the reports and, where one is advised, a needle test.

Advance Breast Care: common questions

Which breast tests can I have at Lucknow Imaging Centre?

The centre does mammography, 3D mammography and breast ultrasound. The breast service also includes needle tests, such as breast FNAC, breast biopsy and cyst aspiration. Marking procedures, such as wire localisation and clip placement, are part of it too. Which of them suits you, and where and by whom it is done, is confirmed after the team has seen your referral and images.

Do I need a prescription for a breast check?

A prescription or a short note from your doctor helps, because it tells the team what question the test should answer. Without one, send the team a message first. They will tell you what is possible and whether a doctor should examine you before the scan.

Is a mammogram or a breast ultrasound better?

Neither is better in every case. A mammogram is the standard test for screening and for small changes. Ultrasound suits a lump and dense or younger breasts. Many people have both, and each answers a different question.

How soon should I be seen if I find a lump?

As soon as you reasonably can, in days rather than weeks. Most lumps are not cancer, but only an examination and imaging can say. Tell the team it is a new lump when you book. If the breast is red, hot and painful with a fever, see a doctor the same day.

What should I bring to a breast appointment?

Bring your doctor's prescription, earlier mammograms and ultrasound reports, and the images themselves (films, a disc or files) if you have them. Add the pathology report if a sample has been taken from the breast before, and a note of family history. Old images let the radiologist see what is new and what has stayed the same.
