If your main finding is a fatty liver on a scan, with diabetes, high cholesterol or extra weight, the fatty liver package fits better. It adds blood sugar and HbA1c, which this package does not include.

Together, these tests show whether liver cells are irritated, whether bile is flowing, and whether the liver is still making what the body needs.

• SGOT and SGPT (also called AST and ALT) are enzymes inside liver cells. They leak into the blood when liver cells are inflamed or damaged.
• Bilirubin is a yellow pigment made when old red blood cells break down. The liver clears it. The total, direct and indirect values help the doctor judge where the process has gone wrong.
• Alkaline phosphatase is an enzyme in the bile ducts, and also in bone. A high value can point to a bile flow problem.
• Albumin and the A/G ratio show how much protein the liver is making. A low level has other causes too, such as kidney disease or poor nutrition.
• The clotting test (prothrombin time, reported with its international normalised ratio) shows how fast your blood clots. The liver makes clotting proteins, so a slow clot can mean it is making too few. Blood thinners also change it, so tell us if you take one.
• Viral markers screen for hepatitis virus infection. The team will tell you which markers are included when you book.
• CBC and lipid profile count your blood cells and measure cholesterol and fats. A low platelet count can go with long-standing liver disease.

No single result gives a diagnosis. Your doctor reads the numbers with your symptoms, medicines, alcohol history and scan.

Blood tests show how the liver is working. The ultrasound shows what it looks like. It uses sound waves, so there is no radiation.

The radiologist looks at the size and texture of the liver, any extra fat in it, the gallbladder and its stones, and the bile ducts. A widened bile duct suggests a blockage that blood tests cannot locate.

The scan has limits. Many liver conditions, early hepatitis among them, can look normal on ultrasound. For blood flow in the liver vessels, your doctor may ask for Colour Doppler as a separate study.

Your report prints a reference range beside each value. A result outside it is a prompt for questions, not a diagnosis. Mild rises in liver enzymes are common and can follow a viral illness, alcohol or a new medicine.

Take the reports to the doctor who advised the package. Your doctor may repeat the blood tests, add others, or refer you to a gastroenterologist. Do not stop a prescribed medicine because you suspect it affects the liver. Ask your doctor first.
