The kidneys filter waste from your blood and make urine. They can lose function slowly and quietly, so early kidney disease often causes no symptoms. This package gives your doctor a baseline or a follow-up.

• Diabetes or high blood pressure, the two commonest causes of long-term kidney damage, where the kidneys are checked at regular intervals.
• Swelling of the feet or around the eyes, foamy urine, or passing much more or much less urine than usual.
• A history of kidney stones, or pain in the side that moves towards the groin.
• An earlier raised creatinine or urea that needs a repeat.
• Regular anti-inflammatory painkillers, some other long-term medicines, or a family history of kidney disease.

Blood tests show how well the kidneys filter. The urine test and the scan show what the kidneys and the urinary tract are doing.

• Serum creatinine is a waste product from muscle. Healthy kidneys clear it, so a rising level means they are filtering less. Doctors often use it with your age and sex to estimate the filtering rate, called eGFR.
• Serum urea is a waste product made from protein. It also rises with dehydration, so it is read together with creatinine.
• Serum uric acid comes from the breakdown of purines in food and in your own cells. A high level can cause gout and some kidney stones, and weak kidneys can raise it.
• Serum calcium: a high level can cause kidney stones, and kidney disease can disturb calcium. If calcium is abnormal, the parathyroid package looks further into why.
• Urine routine and microscopy checks the urine for protein, sugar, blood, pus cells and crystals. Protein or blood can be an early sign of kidney or urinary tract trouble, and pus cells can mean infection.
• Random blood sugar and CBC: random sugar is taken at any time of day and is a quick look for diabetes, a common cause of kidney damage. The CBC can show anaemia, which often goes with long-standing kidney disease.
• The KUB scan shows the size and shape of both kidneys, stones, cysts, swelling of the urine passages and the bladder. It is normally done as an ultrasound, which uses sound waves and no radiation.

Normal results do not rule out every kidney problem. Your doctor reads them with your symptoms and blood pressure.

Each value is printed beside the lab's reference range. A creatinine slightly above the range can come from dehydration, a heavy meat meal or a lot of muscle, so doctors often repeat it before drawing a conclusion.

Protein in the urine, a rising creatinine, stones or swollen urine passages on the scan are the findings most likely to lead to a nephrologist (a kidney specialist) or a urologist. If you take anti-inflammatory painkillers regularly, tell your doctor, because they can strain the kidneys.
