Who the hypertension package is for
This package is for people who have high blood pressure, or have just been told their readings are high, and want the heart and kidneys looked at together. It also suits people whose pressure stays high on treatment, or whose doctor wants a baseline before changing medicines.
High blood pressure often causes no symptoms, yet over the years it strains the heart, the kidneys and the blood vessels. The tests here look for that strain early, and for other risks, such as sugar and cholesterol, that travel with it.
None of these tests diagnoses high blood pressure. That rests on repeated readings, taken seated and rested, by a doctor or with a reliable home monitor. If you only need your pressure checked, a doctor visit is what you want, not a package.
What these tests tell you
Each test looks at a different place where high pressure can leave a mark.
- ECG: records the rhythm and electrical activity of the heart. Years of high pressure can thicken the heart muscle or disturb the rhythm, and an ECG may show signs of either.
- Chest X-ray: shows the size and outline of the heart and the state of the lungs. A heart that has long worked against high pressure can look enlarged.
- Abdominal ultrasound: looks at the size and shape of the kidneys, and at the liver and other organs. Kidney disease can raise blood pressure, and high pressure can damage the kidneys, so their appearance matters.
- Kidney function test and urine routine: the blood test measures the waste products that healthy kidneys clear. The urine test looks for protein, blood and signs of infection. Protein in the urine is an early sign of kidney strain.
- Lipid profile: measures cholesterol and triglycerides, which add to the risk of heart and artery disease.
- Random blood sugar and HbA1c: random means the sample can be taken at any time of day. The second test reflects your average sugar over two to three months. Diabetes and high pressure often occur together.
- CBC: counts red cells, white cells and platelets. It gives a general baseline and shows anaemia if present.

Preparation and aftercare
Before your visit
- Fasting: you will usually fast for the abdominal ultrasound and the lipid profile. The team gives you a single set of hours to follow. Plain water is fine.
- Blood pressure medicines: take them as your doctor has told you, and tell the team what you take. Do not stop them for the tests unless your doctor says so.
- Chest X-ray: the radiation dose from a routine X-ray is small. Tell the staff if you are or may be pregnant, so the benefit can be weighed again for you. Remove metal and jewellery from the chest area.
- ECG: wear a top that opens or lifts easily, and skip oil or cream on the chest. Rest for a few minutes beforehand so your heart rate settles.

What to do with the results
Take the full set to the doctor who treats your blood pressure. Raised kidney markers, protein in the urine or a change on the ECG are reasons to look closer, not a diagnosis by themselves.
Home readings add useful information. A reading in a clinic can run higher than one at home, and a week of morning and evening readings gives a fairer picture. Bring a dated record, along with your list of medicines.
