This package is for people who have diabetes and want a regular review, or whose doctor has asked for a full set of tests after a high sugar result. Over the years diabetes affects more than blood sugar, so the package also looks at the kidneys, liver, blood fats and heart.

Having the results side by side helps your doctor see a pattern instead of a single number. Many people bring the reports to their physician or diabetologist appointment.

It is not the right choice if your doctor asked for one test only, such as HbA1c or a fasting sugar. Ask for that test alone. The package cannot diagnose diabetes by itself either: a doctor does that from your results, your symptoms and sometimes a repeat test. Each part of the package answers a separate question about how diabetes is behaving.

• Fasting and post-meal sugar: the first sample shows your sugar after a night without food. The second, taken about two hours after a meal, shows how your body copes with food.

• Urine microalbumin: looks for tiny amounts of albumin, a protein, in the urine. It is an early sign of kidney strain and often appears before any symptom.
• Liver function test (LFT): checks bilirubin and the liver enzymes. A fatty liver is common alongside diabetes. Raised enzymes can be a clue to it, though the enzymes are often normal.
• Lipid profile: measures cholesterol and triglycerides. High blood fats together with diabetes raise the risk of heart and artery disease.
• ECG: records the electrical activity of the heart in a few minutes. It gives your doctor a baseline, since diabetes raises the risk of heart disease.
• USG KUB: an ultrasound of the kidneys, ureters and bladder. It shows the size and shape of the kidneys, stones, and any blockage that makes a kidney swell.

Normal results are reassuring, but diabetes is checked again at intervals your doctor chooses.

Take the whole set to the doctor who manages your diabetes. Your doctor decides any change to your medicine or insulin dose, not one report read alone.

Bring earlier HbA1c and kidney reports if you have them. Doctors compare trends, and a value that looks high may still be better than last time. A urine microalbumin result can vary from day to day, so your doctor may repeat it before drawing a conclusion.
