Who should take a thyroid package?

The thyroid is a butterfly-shaped gland at the front of the neck. It sets the pace of the body's metabolism. When it makes too little or too much hormone, many parts of the body feel it.

  • Signs of an underactive thyroid: tiredness, weight gain, feeling cold, dry skin, constipation, hair thinning, low mood or heavy periods.
  • Signs of an overactive thyroid: weight loss despite eating, a racing heart, sweating, shaky hands, feeling hot or anxious, or loose stools.
  • A swelling or lump in the neck, or a thyroid nodule mentioned on an earlier scan.
  • Known thyroid disease: a check after a change of dose, or at the interval your doctor set.
  • Irregular periods or difficulty conceiving, or a family history of thyroid disease, where a doctor wants the thyroid ruled out.

If your doctor is worried about calcium, repeated kidney stones or thinning bones, ask about the parathyroid package instead. Those glands sit close to the thyroid but do a different job.

What these tests tell you

Three hormone tests and one antibody test describe how your thyroid is working. The scan shows the gland itself.

  • TSH is made by the pituitary gland in the brain. It rises when the thyroid is underactive and falls when it is overactive, so doctors usually look at it first.
  • T4 and T3 are the thyroid hormones themselves. Read with the TSH, they show whether the gland is making too little or too much.
  • Anti-TPO (thyroid peroxidase antibody) is raised in many people with autoimmune thyroid disease, such as Hashimoto thyroiditis. A positive result can explain an underactive thyroid, or point to a higher chance of one later.
  • The CBC counts your blood cells. Tiredness has many causes, and the count helps your doctor check for anaemia, which can feel the same. The anaemia package goes further.
  • The neck ultrasound shows the size, shape and texture of the thyroid, and any nodules or enlarged lymph nodes. It uses sound waves, not radiation, and needs no preparation.

The scan does not show how well the gland works, and the blood tests do not show lumps. That is why both are here.

If the scan shows a nodule or an enlarged gland

A thyroid nodule is a lump within the gland. Nodules are common, and most are harmless. The radiologist reports the size and features of each one to help your doctor decide what comes next.

Some nodules are watched with repeat scans. Others are sampled with a fine needle, a test called FNAC, so the cells can be examined under a microscope. Your doctor decides whether that is needed. Our FNAC page explains the test, and the team will tell you whether it can be done here for your case.

How to read the result and what happens next

A high TSH with a low T4 usually points to an underactive thyroid. A low TSH with a high T4 or T3 usually points to an overactive one. Results in between can be borderline, and doctors often repeat the test before acting.

Treatment is started and adjusted by your doctor, and the dose is checked with repeat blood tests. How soon to repeat depends on your treatment and your results, so ask your doctor.

What happens on the day

  1. 1

    Booking

Message or call us. Tell the team if you take thyroid tablets, and ask your doctor how to time that morning's dose.

  2. 2

    Blood sample

Blood is drawn from a vein in your arm, usually in under two minutes.

  3. 3

    Neck ultrasound

You lie back, sometimes with a small pillow under your shoulders. Warm gel is applied and a probe is moved across the front of your neck. Most people feel only light pressure.

  4. 4

    Your reports

Ask the team when you book how and when the reports reach you.

  5. 5

    Back to your doctor

Show the results to the doctor who advised the package, along with your earlier thyroid values.

Preparation and aftercare

Before your visit

  • Fasting is usually not needed for thyroid tests, the CBC or the neck scan. The team confirms this when you book, in case your doctor has added other tests.
  • Thyroid tablets: follow your doctor's instructions for that morning's dose. Some doctors ask for the tablet to be taken after the sample and others as usual, so ask yours. Do not skip a dose or change it on your own.
  • Tell the team if you take biotin, which is in some hair and nail supplements. It can interfere with some thyroid blood tests, so ask your doctor whether it should be paused before the test. Mention iron and calcium tablets too, because they can affect how thyroid tablets are absorbed.
  • Tell us if you are pregnant or planning a pregnancy. Doctors read thyroid results differently then.
  • Wear an open neckline and leave necklaces and scarves at home.

Please bring

  • Earlier TSH, T3 and T4 reports
  • Any earlier neck ultrasound report
  • A list of your medicines and doses

After your visit

  • Eat, drink and carry on as usual.
  • Keep the reports. Thyroid tests are repeated over time, and your doctor will compare them.
  • Speak to your doctor before changing any tablet dose. Never change it from the report alone.

Thyroid symptoms that need urgent care

Do not wait for a package appointment if you have:

  • A fast, pounding or irregular heartbeat with chest pain, breathlessness or fainting.
  • Fever, vomiting, agitation or confusion, in someone who has an overactive thyroid.
  • Extreme drowsiness, a very slow pulse, or feeling very cold and confused.
  • A neck swelling that grows quickly, or that makes breathing or swallowing difficult.

Thyroid Health Package: common questions

What tests are in the thyroid package?

The package includes T3, T4 and TSH, which show how the thyroid is working, Anti-TPO, an antibody test, a CBC, and an ultrasound of the neck. If your doctor has asked for anything more, send us the prescription and the team will confirm.

Do I need to fast for a thyroid test?

Usually not. Thyroid hormones can be tested with or without food, though some doctors prefer a morning sample because TSH varies through the day. The team confirms the preparation when you book. For thyroid tablets, follow your doctor's advice on the timing of that morning's dose.

Is the thyroid package the same as the parathyroid package?

No. This package is about the thyroid, which sets your metabolism. Calcium control belongs to the parathyroid glands, a separate set of tiny glands that only sit close by. If your question is about calcium, bones or kidney stones, ask about the parathyroid package instead.

What does a high Anti-TPO mean?

It means your immune system has made antibodies against an enzyme in the thyroid. This is common in autoimmune thyroid conditions, and it can appear while the hormones are still normal. It is a pointer, not a diagnosis, so your doctor reads it with the TSH, T4 and your symptoms.

How often should thyroid tests be repeated?

It depends on whether you are on treatment, how steady your results are and how you feel. Doctors often recheck some weeks after a change of dose, then at longer gaps. Your doctor sets the interval.

Where can I get a thyroid test near me in Lucknow?

Our only centre is at 4/12, Vijayant Khand, near Kathauta Chauraha in Gomti Nagar. Message us on WhatsApp or call 0522-3180995 to book a time. Single blood tests are listed on the pathology lab page.

Can the blood sample be taken at home?

If you cannot travel, send a request on the home visit page or message the team on WhatsApp. They will say whether a visit can be arranged for your area, and that the neck ultrasound still needs a trip to the centre.
